Marine energy and mineral resources

Addressing issues of energy and access to mineral resources will be a major socio-economic and environmental challenge in the coming decades. This challenge relates to both strategic national autonomy and carbon neutrality.

The scope of marine energy spans marine renewable energy infrastructure, products and services. We fully expect that in future the costs involved will be lower, the environmental footprint smaller, and the technologies both widely accepted and readily compliant with the relevant legislation.

The scope of mineral resources includes the infrastructure, products and services associated with exploring the seabed and its deposits such as polymetallic nodules, hydrothermal polymetallic sulphides and cobalt-rich crusts – especially in the deep ocean.

Main Issues

  • Explore and utilise ocean resources and safeguard them for continued productivity
  • Structure and futureproof the relevant sectors
  • Promote parallel, co-located economic activity
