Navecomat Ship eco-design using biocomposite materials

Officially recognised in 2006, the Navecomat project's ambition was to offer the boatbuilding sector a means of responding to environmental concerns, particularly those associated with the end-of-lifecycle disposal of boats made from plastics and traditional composites.

Objectives broadly attained comprise decisive advances in scientific and technical knowledge and in specific and methodological expertise. Extensive correspondence and publications testify to the success and value of the project.
The first biocomposite prototypes - various industrial components, a seat for kayaks and a hull for canoes - have been produced. The next stage includes creating a canoe for small-batch production and a lightweight sailing dinghy that can be mass produced. Navecomat has demonstrated that it is possible to create boats and boatbuilding products using a biocomposite that is entirely biosourced and biodegradable. The project has also confirmed the value of pursuing the R&D as far as the industrial development stage.
