The Arctic system as a whole is in transition. Interaction between mesoscale eddies and sea ice may act as a major mechanism by which the ocean contributes to sea ice retreat, both now and in future. This project aims to study that interaction.

The ImMEDIAT project aims to use both an innovative method for analysing satellite sea ice observations and the ultra-high resolution results from realistic digital simulations to quantify mesoscale activity in the ice-covered Arctic basin. It also aims to determine whether the activity there is fundamentally different from that in other oceans.
